IIT Delhi Hosts Indo-German Workshop on Green AI for Healthcare and Mental Wellness

New Delhi, September 4, 2026: A two-day Indo-German Bilateral Workshop on Green AI for Healthcare and Mental Wellness was held at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) on September 3 and 4, bringing together experts and early-career researchers from India and Germany to discuss sustainable and responsible applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

The workshop was sponsored by the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC), a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The event was organised by Prof. Tanmoy Chakraborty of IIT Delhi and Prof. Iryna Gurevych of TU Darmstadt. More than 30 experts and early-career researchers participated through keynote presentations, technical sessions, panel discussions and poster presentations.

Focus on Sustainable AI in Healthcare

The workshop focused on the environmental and societal implications of Generative AI, with particular attention to developing AI systems that are energy-efficient, sustainable and suitable for real-world healthcare applications.

Mental wellness was another major focus of the discussions, with participants examining how AI can contribute to mental healthcare while addressing challenges related to privacy, accessibility, clinical relevance and responsible deployment.

The workshop also sought to connect environmental sustainability with healthcare equity, while creating opportunities for stronger Indo-German collaboration in human-centred and sustainable AI.

Dr. Kusumita Arora, Director, IGSTC, said the workshop was intended to deepen Indo-German cooperation in Green AI, healthcare and mental wellness and encourage the development of sustainable innovations with real-world impact.

Key Objectives of the Workshop

The workshop aimed to:

  • Promote sustainable and energy-efficient AI solutions for healthcare and mental wellness.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange between India and Germany on Green AI and responsible AI deployment.
  • Explore AI applications in medical imaging, clinical decision support, mental health and multilingual healthcare.
  • Identify technical, infrastructure, regulatory and ethical challenges in healthcare AI.
  • Strengthen collaboration among academic institutions, clinicians and industry.
  • Develop a roadmap for future joint research, innovation and capacity-building initiatives.

Prof. Tanmoy Chakraborty highlighted the need to move beyond simply developing larger AI models and focus on systems that are efficient, sustainable, trustworthy and accessible.

Prof. Iryna Gurevych emphasised the growing need for mental healthcare and noted that smaller, privacy-preserving, on-device AI systems could offer useful applications by keeping sensitive information local. She also stressed the importance of clinical grounding, privacy-safe data and meaningful evaluation when developing AI tools for mental health.

Building a Roadmap for Future Collaboration

The workshop provided a platform for researchers and experts from both countries to exchange ideas on sustainable AI and identify areas for future cooperation.

By bringing together perspectives from technology, healthcare and research, the event aimed to establish stronger foundations for joint research, innovation and capacity building in Green AI, healthcare and mental wellness.
