Thiruvarur: Students looking for admission to an engineering programme at the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) have another opportunity to secure a seat for the 2026-27 academic session. The university has announced open counselling and spot admission for its B.Tech in Materials Science and Technology programme against four vacant seats. According to the notification issued by CUTN's Department of Materials Science, the available seats include three seats under the OBC category and one seat for SC/ST candidates. The last date to apply in person and the entrance examination and spot admission process are scheduled for August 31, 2026, at 10 AM.
Four Seats Available for Spot Admission
The university has announced the following vacancies for the B.Tech Materials Science and Technology programme:
- OBC: 3 seats
- SC/ST: 1 seat
The counselling and spot admission will be conducted at the Department of Materials Science, CUTN. Candidates interested in the programme have been asked to submit their expression of willingness to pursue the course in person on August 31.
Students Without CUET Score Can Also Participate
One of the notable aspects of the latest admission notice is that students who did not appear for CUET UG 2026 are not automatically excluded. CUTN has specified that candidates who have not appeared for CUET UG 2026 can participate by taking an entrance test conducted by the Department of Materials Science. The university has laid out a preference-based selection process. Candidates who had already registered for B.Tech Materials Science and Technology at CUTN will receive the first preference. The second preference will go to candidates who appeared for CUET UG 2026 for the programme but did not register at CUTN. Candidates who did not appear for CUET UG 2026 can be considered after appearing for the departmental entrance test.
Eligibility Criteria
For admission to the B.Tech Materials Science and Technology programme, candidates must have passed their HSC examination or an equivalent examination from a recognised board in India.
The minimum marks requirement is:
- General category: 60%
- OBC-NCL/EWS: 55%
- SC/ST/PwD: 50%
Candidates applying under reserved categories must also produce the required original certificates where applicable.
Admission Fee Set at ₹51,520
Candidates who participate in the spot admission process will also have to pay the applicable registration and admission charges. The spot registration fee is ₹700 for General and OBC-NCL candidates, while candidates belonging to GEN-EWS, SC/ST, Third Gender and PwD categories have to pay ₹600. The admission fee for the programme is ₹51,520. Candidates selected through the spot admission process are required to pay the admission fee on the same day.
CUTN Continues Admission Process for 2026-27
The B.Tech Materials Science and Technology programme is listed among CUTN's undergraduate programmes for the 2026-27 academic session. The university's admission portal currently shows multiple selection and open-counselling updates across its UG programmes, indicating that admission processes are continuing for seats that remain available. Candidates interested in the B.Tech Materials Science and Technology spot admission should note that registration, entrance testing and admission are scheduled for August 31, leaving no scope for delay for those seeking to participate in this particular round. The university has also clarified that submitting merit registration or an expression of willingness does not guarantee admission. Selection will depend on the applicable preference order, eligibility and availability of seats.
