Bio-Vantages 2026 at IISER Kolkata to Offer Advanced Training in Bioanalytical Science and Bioinformatics

Kolkata : IISER Kolkata is set to host Bio-Vantages 2026: Frontiers in Bioanalytical Instrumentation and Methodology, an intensive specialised workshop aimed at strengthening expertise across modern bioanalytical science, data analysis and bioinformatics.

The workshop will be held from December 14 to December 17, 2026, at the Mohanpur Campus of IISER Kolkata. The programme is designed around the concept of a “Bench-to-Bioinformatics” workflow, taking participants from experimental data generation and advanced instrumentation to computational analysis and biological interpretation.

With biological systems becoming increasingly complex, researchers are generating large volumes of experimental and high-throughput data. Bio-Vantages 2026 aims to address the growing need for skills that can connect laboratory-based data acquisition with meaningful biological insights.

Five Specialised Modules at Bio-Vantages 2026

The workshop will feature five specialised modules covering imaging, tissue engineering, spatial multiomics, bioinformatics and statistical analysis.

Module I: Cell View & Imaging Flow Cytometry

This module will focus on combining the high-speed capabilities of flow cytometry with the morphological information provided by microscopy.

Participants will receive training in:

  • Fluidics and optics fundamentals
  • High-speed image acquisition
  • Identification and isolation of rare cell populations

Module II: Tissue Microenvironment in Regenerative Medicine and Cancer

The second module will explore how engineering principles can be applied to recreate physiological tissue environments for biological research.

Key areas will include:

  • Fundamentals of 3D bioprinting
  • Selection of biocompatible polymers
  • Scaffold-guided cell growth
  • Applications in cancer and regenerative medicine research

Module III: Spatial Multiomics and MALDI Tissue Imaging

This module will introduce participants to approaches that allow researchers to understand the spatial distribution of molecules within tissue samples rather than relying only on bulk analysis.

Training areas will include:

  • Sample preparation for MALDI
  • Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) workflows
  • Spatial Transcriptomics

Module IV: Bioinformatics Pipelines for Multiomics

The fourth module will focus on computational approaches for handling and interpreting large datasets generated through modern high-throughput technologies.

Participants will learn about:

  • Linux and R-based pipelines
  • Quality control of sequencing data
  • Integrated analysis of genomics
  • Proteomics and metabolomics data

Module V: Statistical Analysis of High-Throughput Data

The final module will focus on statistical methods required to convert large-scale biological datasets into reliable and meaningful results.

Key areas include:

  • Data normalisation
  • Batch-effect correction
  • Dimensionality reduction
  • PCA, t-SNE and UMAP
  • False Discovery Rate (FDR) analysis

Why IISER Kolkata?

The multidisciplinary structure of Bio-Vantages 2026 aligns with the interdisciplinary research environment of IISER Kolkata. The modules bring together concepts from physics, chemistry, computational biology and statistics, creating an integrated training experience.

The programme also has strong relevance for the biotechnology and life-sciences sectors, where expertise in areas such as imaging flow cytometry, spatial multiomics and computational biology is increasingly important.

By combining advanced laboratory techniques with bioinformatics and statistical analysis, the workshop aims to help participants move beyond simply operating scientific instruments and develop the ability to generate, analyse and interpret high-quality research data.
