
New Delhi: Nine Indian universities have made it to the top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, securing a total of 12 top-50 positions across various academic disciplines. However, while some institutions improved their rankings, others experienced a decline compared to the previous year.
Key Highlights:
The Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, achieved the highest rank among Indian institutions, securing the 20th spot globally in Engineering-Mineral and Mining.
IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur ranked 28th and 45th, respectively, in the same category, though both saw a drop from last year.
IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay improved significantly in Engineering and Technology, moving to 26th and 28th place, respectively.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore remained in the top 50 for Business and Management Studies but experienced a decline, with IIM Ahmedabad dropping from 22nd to 27th and IIM Bangalore from 32nd to 40th.
India now ranks fourth globally in Computer Science & Information Systems, with 42 entries, up from 28 last year.
Overview of QS Subject-Wise Rankings 2025
The latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject is the most extensive yet, covering 55 subjects across five broad areas—Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management. This year, 171 new institutions joined the rankings, reflecting the growing competition worldwide.

Increase in Indian Representation
This year, 79 Indian universities made it to the rankings, an increase of 10 from the previous edition. Indian institutions appeared 533 times in the rankings, marking a 25.7% rise. While 156 institutions improved their rankings, 101 saw a decline.
India also recorded the fifth-highest number of new entries globally, following China, the US, the UK, and Korea. Notable new entrants in the top 100 include IIT Madras and Vellore Institute of Technology for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, and IISc Bangalore and IIT Kanpur for Engineering-Mineral and Mining.
