Rajasthan: 611 Government Schools Without Buildings

Jaipur: As many as 611 government schools in Rajasthan are functioning without their own buildings, the state government informed the Legislative Assembly. The disclosure has brought renewed attention to gaps in school infrastructure across the state. The data is based on UDISE 2025–26 figures under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. The issue has emerged amid increased scrutiny of the condition of government schools in Rajasthan. The government has said that an audit conducted after the Jhalawar school building collapse highlighted infrastructure concerns across government schools.

Rajasthan School Infrastructure: Key Figures

According to the data presented in the Assembly, the infrastructure gaps extend beyond schools without buildings. Of the 64,484 government schools that have their own buildings, 2,047 do not have toilet facilities, while 1,049 lack drinking-water facilities. The issue is spread across several districts. Jaipur has 38 government schools without their own buildings, while Aklera block in Jhalawar has the highest number at 23. Khanpur and Jhalrapatan in Jhalawar have 16 and 11 such schools, respectively. The figures have raised concerns about the availability of safe and adequate learning spaces for students, particularly in government schools serving rural and underserved communities.

Government Plans to Improve School Infrastructure

The Rajasthan government has said that funds have been allocated for repairing and upgrading government schools. The state has earmarked ₹550 crore for school repairs and renovation and ₹450 crore for constructing buildings for schools that do not have their own buildings or are operating from dilapidated structures. The government has also indicated that additional funding will be mobilised through sources including Samagra Shiksha, state funds, District Mineral Foundation Trust, CSR and other available funds for construction, repair and maintenance of school buildings.

Why the Issue Matters

The availability of safe buildings, classrooms, toilets and drinking water is a basic requirement for students and teachers. The latest figures highlight that despite significant government spending on education, infrastructure gaps continue to affect a section of Rajasthan's government schools. The disclosure is likely to keep the focus on the condition of government school infrastructure and the measures being taken to provide students with safer and better learning environments.
