New Delhi - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) successfully concluded SANGAM 2026, an inclusive Inter college sports meet organised for students with disabilities, marking a significant milestones in accessible sports within Indian higher education
organised by the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) under the office of Diversity and inclusion, the event witnessed the participation of around 300 students with disabilities from multiple institutions, including IIT Delhi, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Hyderabad, the University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University and several colleges across the National Capital Region.
The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, highlighted the institute's commitment to inclusive Campus Life. The closing ceremony was grazed by Sharad Kumar, India's Para-athlete and silver medallist at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, as the Chief Guest.
SANGAM 2026 featured a wide range of inclusive sporting events, including Athletics, Cricket, Badminton, Chess, Blind Chess and Table Tennis with a structured classification system ensuring fair competition across visual, hearing, upper limb, lower limb and wheelchair categories.The event also stood out of strong emphasis on gender inclusion , with mixed and inclusive teams competing together.
In the competitive outcomes, IIT Kanpur emerged as championship in Cricket (Diverse Disabilities), while IIT Delhi secured the runner position. Ramjas college (DU) claimed the first place in Blind Cricket, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University. IIT Delhi topped the Chess category, while the university of Delhi dominated Blind Chess, securing all podium positions. Strong performances were also recorded by athletes from IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT rookie and IIT Gandhinagar in badminton and Table Tennis events.
Sangam 2026 successfully fostered collaboration among the premier technical institutions and central universities, setting a new benchmark for inclusive sporting ecosystem in indian campuses and reinforcing the belief that athletic excellence transcends physical limitations.
