Bengaluru: Classes for the first-year degree students are set to commence soon while colleges still wait for the students to join in after National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and Common University Entrance Test (CUET) are out and the Common Entrance Test (CET) counselling is over.

“Unlike in the previous years, where admissions would have been complete by this time as things were more certain, admissions this time are still under way. Board results came late. Additionally, students are waiting for CUET to be completed. They will check the results and find where they are standing before confirming the admissions. While admissions in few of our programmes are good, some in pure sciences and traditional courses are still awaiting students. Commerce and management programmes are 90% full. But some of the arts and science programmes are 75% full. We are expecting more students after CUET results are out,” said a spokesperson of Mount Carmel College (MCC).

MCC started its classes earlier this week with the induction programmes.

It is likely to get more students after CUET results are out, said St. Joseph’s University. “Most of our programmes are full as we clearly mention that only students who are certain about pursuing programmes must apply. There are few seats in arts programmes. We are expecting students after CUET results,” said Fr. Victor Lobo, principal. Classes are expected to commence by August 22.

Christ (deemed-to-be-university) will start its classes from August 17. “Students are coming to offline classes after attending classes 11 and 12 in the online mode. In a recent meeting with the lecturers, I have instructed them to be empathetic and come down to their level, and coach them from the basics,” said Fr. Abraham V, vice chancellor. He also added that the very few engineering seats that are left to be filled will be emptied soon once the CET counselling starts.

“We will help students who join late by providing extra coaching on Saturdays and help with necessary material for the same,” said the MCC spokesperson.

Bengaluru City University (BCU) has set September 1 as the date for commencement of classes. Admissions are still on till August 30. “This is the common calendar given to us by the government. “We will be following what the government has instructed us,” said Lingaraju Gandhi, VC, BCU.
