118 Teachers Honoured at Delhi’s ‘Shikshak Mahakumbh’ on Teachers’ Day
New Delhi, September 5, 2026: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta honoured 118 teachers for their outstanding contribution to education at the ‘Shikshak Mahakumbh – State Teachers Awards 2026’, organised at Thyagaraj Stadium on Teachers’ Day.
The award ceremony recognised teachers for their dedication, innovation and contribution to the academic and overall development of students across Delhi’s schools.
Education Minister Ashish Sood, MP Bansuri Swaraj, MLAs Abhay Verma, Neeraj Basoya and Chandan Kumar Chaudhary, Education Department Director Ankita Anand, senior officials, principals, teachers and students attended the event.
118 teachers recognised across categories
A total of 118 teachers were honoured in different categories. The awardees included:
- 20 Heads of Schools (HoSs)
- 69 teachers from Directorate of Education and MCD schools
- Teachers from three CM Shri Schools
- Librarians
- Special educators
- Sports teachers
- Other educators who have made notable contributions to education
The programme featured a guard of honour presented by NCC cadets, a welcome song by music teachers and a traditional welcome by schoolchildren.
Addressing the gathering, CM Rekha Gupta said the recognition was not merely an honour for professional achievements but also a tribute to the dedication, patience and commitment of teachers who shape the lives of children every day.
‘Empowered teachers are the foundation of developed Delhi’
The Chief Minister described teachers as the strong foundation of society, saying their role extends beyond delivering textbook knowledge. Teachers also help students develop values, skills, confidence, discipline and a sense of responsibility.
She said the Delhi government is committed to ensuring that every child receives quality education that combines knowledge with skills, values and confidence.
For the financial year 2026-27, Delhi has allocated Rs 19,148 crore for education, while efforts are also being made to strengthen technological infrastructure in government schools.
According to the Chief Minister, 170 modern language laboratories are being established to improve students’ language and communication abilities. These include 70 CM Shri Schools and 100 other government schools.
She also highlighted initiatives such as Neev, Rashtraneeti and NIPUN Sankalp, which focus on areas including entrepreneurship, innovation, problem-solving, democratic values and foundational literacy and numeracy.
Teachers urged to promote responsible citizenship
CM Rekha Gupta stressed that solving Delhi’s long-standing challenges requires not only government action but also changes in citizens’ behaviour and attitudes.
She called upon teachers to inculcate values such as:
- Cleanliness and environmental responsibility
- Discipline and respect for rules
- Sensitivity towards others
- Helping people in need
- Responsible citizenship
She also emphasised the importance of creating awareness among children about ‘good touch and bad touch’ to strengthen child safety.
Describing children as society’s heritage, the Chief Minister said their safety, education and future are a shared responsibility.
Delhi government aims to make the capital free of begging
Referring to the government’s resolve to make Delhi free of begging, CM Rekha Gupta said ensuring that no child is deprived of education should be the first step.
She appealed to teachers, institutions and citizens to collectively identify children who are out of school and help bring them back into the education system.
The Chief Minister also said teachers and schools have an important role in preparing young people to contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.
She expressed confidence that the support of teachers, along with government initiatives, would strengthen the vision of ‘Viksit Delhi’.
10,417 teacher recruitment process initiated
Education Minister Ashish Sood said the dedication and efforts of thousands of teachers have played a significant role in strengthening Delhi’s education system.
He said the objective of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is not only to bring children into schools but also to equip them with better learning, understanding and capabilities.
The Minister announced that the recruitment process for 10,417 teachers has been initiated to address the shortage of teachers in the capital.
In addition, recruitment of 613 special teachers has been provided for to improve educational support for students with special needs.
Sood said the government is also working on teachers’ administrative, HR and professional development concerns. Directions have been issued to address duty-related and other service-related issues faced by guest teachers.
He expressed confidence that under the leadership of CM Rekha Gupta, significant progress would be made in resolving teachers’ HR-related concerns by next year.
