Guwahati ; The Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS & AI) at IIT Guwahati has marked a major milestone, celebrating the graduation of its first batch (2021–25) with an impressive 91% placement rate. The achievement highlights the growing demand for AI and data science professionals in global industries and reinforces IIT Guwahati’s leadership in emerging technology education.
Global Companies Recruit from Inaugural Batch
Established in 2021, the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence was among the first in the IIT system to offer a dedicated B.Tech programme in Data Science and AI.
According to the institute’s placement report, the 2021–25 batch received job offers from several top-tier global companies including Google, Microsoft, and Warner Bros Discovery.
Additionally, one student has secured admission to Carnegie Mellon University, USA, to pursue higher studies — further reflecting the academic strength of the programme.
“Ahead of the Curve in Emerging Technologies”
Expressing pride in the institute’s success, Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, said:
“By introducing a B.Tech in Data Science and AI in 2021, we were ahead of the curve. The successful placement of our first batch validates both the demand for these skills and the quality of the programme we have built.”
Rahul Mehta, Founder of the Mehta Family Foundation, also praised the outcome, stating:
“The success of the inaugural graduating class is a testament to the dedication of IIT Guwahati’s faculty and the talent of its students. Our vision was to empower the next generation of leaders in this transformative field.”
Students Worked on Advanced AI Projects
The four-year curriculum emphasized hands-on learning and research, including a one-year capstone project where students tackled real-world challenges.
Projects covered cutting-edge areas such as:
- Deepfake detection
- Conversational AI
- Multimodal healthcare systems
- Large Language Model (LLM) automation
- Robotics and federated learning
- Strong Industry and Research Outcomes
Highlighting the diversity of the graduating class, Professor Ratnajit Bhattacharjee, Head of the School, said:
“Our pride lies in the diversity of outcomes. Some graduates are stepping into leadership-track roles in industry, while others are moving into advanced research. That flexibility reflects the strength of our programme in preparing world-class problem solvers.”
The Mehta Family School of Data Science and AI currently offers B.Tech, M.Tech, PhD, and online B.Sc (Hons) programmes, drawing students from across India and abroad.
