New Delhi. : The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued detailed guidelines outlining the essential requirements for students to be eligible to appear in Class X and XII Board Examinations.
CBSE clarified that Classes IX–X and XI–XII are two-year programmes, and students must study all subjects for two consecutive years to qualify for board exams. A minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory. Internal assessment, introduced as per the National Education Policy (NEP-2020), will form an integral part of evaluation over the two years. Students not completing this assessment will have their results withheld and may be placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ category.
CBSE also highlighted rules regarding additional subjects: in Class X, students may offer two additional subjects besides the five compulsory ones, while in Class XII, only one additional subject can be taken. However, schools must obtain CBSE approval to offer these subjects, ensuring the availability of teachers and labs.
The Board further stated that students placed in “Compartment” or “Essential Repeat” categories in additional subjects may reappear as private candidates, while those not meeting the eligibility norms will not be allowed to appear in Board exams for additional subjects.
The guidelines, CBSE said, aim to maintain academic integrity and streamline the examination process for future sessions.
