New Delhi : Jamia Millia Millia(JMI) today celebrated ‘World Braille Day’ by organizing a number of programmes on the campus. January 4th every year is internationally observed as World Braille Day to commemorate the birthday of French educator Louis Braille who invented the Braille system (script) which became a source of learning, knowledge and wisdom for millions of visually impaired people across the globe.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Tasneem Fatima met the visually challenged faculty members of the university at the conference hall of the Vice Chancellor’s Office. She listened to their issues and assured them to address their issues in the best possible manner.
A symposium on ‘International Braille Day’ was organized by the ‘Enabling Unit’ of JMI at the Department of Teacher Training & Non-Formal Education (IASE). Prof. Naheed Zahoor, Head Department of Teacher Training & Non-Formal Education graced the occasion as the Chief Guest highlighted the important contribution made by Louis Braille for the visually challenged people. She also encouraged the B.Ed. and M.Ed. special students to do quality research on Braille Script. Dr. Mohd. Faizullah Khan, Programme Coordinator highlighted the purpose of the Braille Day and why it is celebrated as an international event.
Dr. Mohammad Asjad Ansari, Dr. Ansari Ahmad, Dr. Arif Mohammad, Mr. Mohammad Abrar Alam and many other faculty members attended the programme. All the students of B.Ed. and M.Ed. Special were also present. The programme ended with formal vote of thanks by Dr. Saurabh Rey.
Child Guidance Centre run by Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Welfare Society, JMI celebrated World Braille Day under the leadership of General Secretary of the Society Prof. Sara Begum. During the program the importance of Braille as a means of communication for the visually impaired was discussed in detail. It helps in creating awareness for the full realisation of human rights in an inclusive society. It was emphasized during the discussion that Braille Literacy needs to be considered as an important aspect of education for the visually impaired in learning music, mathematics and science.
