Madurai - A powerful message on gender equality and women’s economic empowerment was delivered at a one-day workshop organised by the Research and Extension Centre / Madurai EDC Cell of Mother Teresa Women’s University. The workshop was held at Keelakuyilkudi, Madurai, in association with the Voluntary Association for People’s Service (VAPS) and Green Fem Producers Company Limited.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest Mrs. R. Elamathi, women entrepreneurship motivator and Director of Madurai-based Green Fem Producers Company Limited, emphasised that gender equality is not a women’s issue alone but a collective responsibility of men, women, institutions, and policymakers. She urged young women to strive for economic independence through entrepreneurship, stating that self-reliance plays a crucial role in achieving equality and dignity.
Mrs. Elamathi highlighted the importance given by the United Nations to women's self-reliance and encouraged students to understand real world challenges faced by women. She addressed entrepreneurship and business initiatives can empower women to overcome social and economic barriers.
Dr. M. Pushpa Rani, Director, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, noted that financial independence forms the backbone of gender equality. She remarked that when women earn and are empowered, families progress and society as a whole advances. Dr. M. Subburajan, Team Leader, VAPS, also observed that women entrepreneurs are increasingly emerging as strong leaders in various sectors.
The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Valli Devasena, EDC Coordinator, Mother Teresa Women’s University, who welcomed the participants. According to a press release, over 300 students benefited from the programme, which focused on “Achieving Gender Equality through Financial Independence – Success Journey of Women Entrepreneurs.”
