Transgender students await inclusion of third gender category in board exam forms; Maharashtra registers highest, ahead of CBSE

While school children are still waiting for more inclusion in board exams, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has paved the way by adding the third gender/transgender category to some of the biggest competitive exams of the country, such as JEE Main and NEET UG exam.

New Delhi :- After the Supreme Court recognised transgender people as a third gender in 2014, CBSE and a few state boards added it as a separate category along with male and female. Some state boards introduced the same in 2017, however, most are still awaiting “requests” from transgenders to create a category for them.

As per UDISE+ 2019-20, a total of 61,214 transgender children were enrolled in schools, of which 5813 and 4798 transgender children were registered in Class 10 and Class 12, respectively. According to census 2011, there are 4.88 lakh transgender people in the country and the literacy rate among them is 56.1 per cent.
