St. George’s University Shares Tips to Raise Awareness of Prostate Cancer for Men’s Health Awareness Month
India, November 6, 2025: Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers among men worldwide and is the second most prevalent cancer among Indian men after oral cancer. To mark Men’s Health Awareness Month, St. George’s University (SGU), School of Medicine, Grenada, has shared simple yet effective steps to help men protect their health.
1. Get Checked Early
Prostate cancer develops slowly and often shows no symptoms until later stages. Men over 40 — especially those with a family history — should undergo regular screening to improve early detection and treatment success.
2. Know Your Screening Options
Two key tests include the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE). Elevated PSA levels may indicate prostate issues, including cancer, while DRE helps detect prostate irregularities.
3. Stay Active
Regular physical activity like walking, cycling, or swimming for at least 30 minutes daily helps reduce cancer risk, manage weight, and balance hormones.
4. Eat Healthy
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can lower prostate cancer risk. SGU advises:
-
Eat five portions of fruits and vegetables daily.
-
Choose whole grains and starchy foods.
-
Replace processed meats with fish or legumes.
-
Limit high-fat dairy and processed foods.
5. Limit Alcohol & Quit Smoking
Reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking can lower the risk of several cancers, including advanced prostate cancer. Men should seek professional help to adopt healthier habits.
Prostate cancer awareness is about prevention as much as detection.
Through early screening, healthy living, and proactive healthcare, men can significantly reduce their risks.
As part of Men’s Health Awareness Month, St. George’s University urges men across India to stay informed, take preventive action, and prioritize their long-term well-being.
