Goa - A recent study conducted by faculty members at GOA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT (GIM) has highlighted how sustainable hiring practices and employees socialisation can play a key role in promoting environmental responsibility with organisations.
The study explains that sustainability efforts are more effective when employees are actively involved rather than simply following company policies. It introduces the concept of a "green citizen", referring to the employees who voluntarily take the responsibility for sustainable practices beyond their job roles.
The research was led by Rahul Sukumaran, Assistant Professor in the Department of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources at GIM, in collaboration with Prof. Shaju Meetna from LEAD College of Management. The findings have been published in the International Journal of Organizational analysis.
According to the study organisations that recruit employees whose personal values aligned with sustainability goals are more likely to build genuine and long-lasting green practices.Purpose-driven onboarding and training further strengthen employee's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Speaking about the findings, Prof. Sukumaran said that the environmental responsibility begins with individuals and gradually shapes sustainable management practices that also support organisational growth. The research also noted notes that employees who strongly identify with their organisation's sustainability values are more likely to adopt eco-friendly thinking in daily decision-making. This employee focused approach helps organisations improve engagement, innovation and job satisfaction while also advancing environmental goals.
The study encourages organizations to integrate sustainability into their core culture rather than treating it as an additional policy , enabling employees to create meaningful and long term positive environmental impact.
