LUMAMI, NAGALAND : Nagaland University, the only Central University in the State, has registered a significant improvement in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, securing a place in the 151–200 rank band.
The results were announced on 4th September 2025 at an awards function in New Delhi by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Nagaland University’s inclusion in the 151–200 band in 2025 reflects its commitment to academic excellence, infrastructure development, and inclusive growth—marking another important step in strengthening higher education in Nagaland and the North-East region.
Speaking on this milestone, Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, said, “Nagaland University has figured in the NIRF Ranking 2025 in the band of 151–200. It means a lot for us because we were out of the 151-200 band for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024). Now, we are back in the reckoning. I hope next year we will get into the top 100. All this is possible because of the efforts and dedication of all stakeholders to take Nagaland University to a different level.”
Some of the Key initiatives that enabled Nagaland University to improve its performance in NIRF Rankings include
- Strengthening Research and Innovation: The University encouraged faculty and students to engage in impactful research, publish in reputed journals and increase collaborations with National and International institutions
- Enhanced Academic Infrastructure: The laboratorie, libraries, ICT-enabled classrooms, and research facilities have been updated to create a conducive learning and research environment
- Faculty Development and Capacity Building: Regular training, workshops and faculty development programs are organized to enhance teaching, mentoring, and research skills.
- Student Support and Progression: Providing career guidance, placement assistance, scholarships, and skill development programs to improve student outcomes.
- Digital Initiatives: Adoption of digital platforms for teaching-learning, examination, and administration to improve efficiency and transparency.
- Community Engagement and Extension Activities: Promoting outreach programs, local resource utilization, and initiatives that connect the university with society at large.
- Good Governance and Transparency: Streamlining administrative processes, ensuring timely academic calendars, and fostering participatory governance.
These initiatives collectively contributed to the university’s improved performance in the NIRF framework, reflecting the University’s commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and societal impact.
Adding to this recognition, Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik has been honoured as a dynamic leader for “Excellent Performance in the physical progress of Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA)-funded projects” for Nagaland University. The citation was conferred by Mr. Mohammad Thorpic, Managing Director and CEO, HEFA.
HEFA, a joint venture between the Ministry of Education and Canara Bank, was set up in 2017 to provide financial support for developing high-quality infrastructure in premier higher educational institutions of India. Through HEFA’s assistance, institutions like Nagaland University have been able to upgrade facilities and strengthen academic and research ecosystems.
Some of the Key infrastructure projects taken up by Nagaland University with HEFA Funding include a New Science Faculty Building at the Headquarters in Lumami besides an Administrative Building and a VIP Guest House.
At Kohima campus, a Six-storied building for School of Engineering and Technology with total area of 5924 sqm has been constructed with 25 rooms for each of the six departments under the School. Permanent buildings for the Departments of Hindi, Tenydie and Linguistics under one roof have been completed.
In addition, Medziphema campus got a new Administrative Building. Many other infrastructure projects under HEFA are in the pipeline
The 10th edition of the NIRF India Ranking Results was released by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Education, in the presence of Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education; Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education; Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Chairman, AICTE; Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, NBA; and Dr. Anil Kumar Nassa, Member Secretary, NBA.
This year witnessed a record 14,163 applications from 7,692 unique institutions, including 4,045 in the Overall Category, 1,584 in Engineering, and 4,030 in General Degree Colleges. The growing participation underscores NIRF’s role as a fair, transparent, and credible system of ranking Indian institutions.
Launched in 2015, NIRF evaluates institutions on five broad parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practices; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception.
