Kerala Government to Build Houses for Gold Medal Winners of School Olympics
Kerala: In a unique and compassionate move, the Kerala government has announced a special project to build homes for gold medal winners of the Kerala School Olympics who come from economically disadvantaged families.
Education Minister V Sivankutty said
The initiative aims to ensure that young athletes who bring glory to the state are rewarded not just with medals, but with meaningful support for their lives and families.
50 Houses Planned in the First Phase
The government, in collaboration with various organisations and public contributions, plans to construct at least 50 houses in the first phase.
“Discussions with several organisations have already taken place, and the response has been very encouraging,” the Minister said. “This is our way of honouring the hard work and determination of our student-athletes.”
Community Support and Participation
The initiative has already received strong backing from multiple institutions. The CPI(M) Idukki District Committee will build a house for Devapriya, a gold medal-winning athlete from Idukki, while the Kerala Scouts and Guides—under the Education Department—has pledged to construct a home for Devananda, a student-athlete from Kozhikode.
Minister’s Appeal for Public Support
Minister Sivankutty shared that he was moved by the living conditions of many young champions.
“Several talented athletes come from humble backgrounds. This initiative aims to offer them dignity, stability, and recognition for their achievements,” he said.
He also urged citizens, NGOs, and corporates to contribute to the noble cause and help uplift the lives of these promising young sportspersons.
Launch Expected After School Olympics
The ongoing Kerala School Olympics, featuring thousands of student participants from across the state, will conclude on October 28. The housing initiative is expected to be officially launched soon after the event’s closing ceremony.
This initiative highlights Kerala’s commitment to empowering youth through sports and ensuring that talent, regardless of economic background, receives both recognition and tangible support.
