NEP 2020 Marks India’s First Real Step Towards Educational Decolonisation: Kerala Governor

Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar urges citizens to embrace NEP as a path to reclaim India’s status as a Vishwa Guru at national education conference in Kochi

KOCHI : Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has hailed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as India's first sincere move to decolonise its education system. Speaking at the ‘Gyan Sabha’ national education conference in Kochi, organised by Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, the Governor said that despite decades of independence, the country had continued to carry forward a “colonial mindset” through its education structure.

“Our thinking was shaped by a system introduced during colonial rule, and unknowingly, that mindset seeped into our family and social life,” Arlekar said. He described the NEP 2020 as a transformative opportunity to shift away from that legacy and build a future rooted in Indian knowledge systems and values.

Lauding the educational reforms introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Arlekar noted, “The changes in NEP 2020 are unlike anything we have learned in the past. This is a chance to reconnect with our intellectual traditions and re-establish India as a Vishwa Guru (world teacher).”

The Governor pointed out that independence in 1947 was largely political, and the real challenge today lies in embracing cultural and intellectual freedom. “Now is the time to be part of a broader transformation,” he said.

Addressing a gathering that included Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, Arlekar also emphasised that the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) extends beyond economic growth to include comprehensive societal development, underlining the pivotal role education plays in national progress.
