JMI’s organizes a Mentorship Workshop on Essentials of Mentoring: Navigating towards Positive Outcome

This program was in sync with the initiatives of the National task Force constituted by Honourable Supreme Court of India, and aimed to equip both faculty and students with essential skills for effective mentor-mentee relationship.

New Delhi, September 26, 2025 : As a part of the ‘Manodarpan initiative of the Higher Educational Institutions’ the BDS Mentorship Committee of Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), organised a Two-Day Mentorship Workshop, titled “Essentials of Mentoring: Navigating towards Positive Outcome”, for the faculty members and students. This program was in sync with the initiatives of the National task Force constituted by Honourable Supreme Court of India, and aimed to equip both faculty and students with essential skills for effective mentor-mentee relationship.

The first day of the workshop commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address by Prof. Keya Sircar, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry and Organising Chairperson, who emphasised the significance of mentorship in academic settings and highlighted the importance of the evolving role of educators. She lauded the BDS mentorship program, launched by the Faculty of Dentistry in 2018 and its meaningful contributions to student well-being.

Prof. Zubair Meenai, Department of Social Work, JMI and Chairman, Student Wellness Committee, JMI spoke about the mental health issues faced by the youth and proactive measures being planned by the university to manage them. Prof. Priti Dhawan, Chief Guest for the program, from the Department of Psychology at Lady Sri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi, delivered the keynote address on the topic ‘Empowerment or Enmeshment: A Mentor's Dilemma’. Her talk explored pertinent aspects of the mentor-mentee relationship, offering valuable insights into the mentor’s role. Following this, the keynote speaker, Dr Priya Bhatnagar conducted an engaging Faculty Workshop ‘Creating a Safe Space for Mentees: Exploring Nuances and Challenges’. The interactive session focused on building trust, understanding mentees’ emotional needs, and creating an inclusive mentoring environment. An interactive workshop titled ‘Developing Psycho-social and Emotional Competency’ was conducted on the second day for the BDS students of the Faculty of Dentistry by Dr Anisha Juneja, Head of the Psychology Department, Aryabhatta College, University of Delhi.

The two-day workshop was meaningful and impactful providing faculty and students with practical tools and perspectives to foster healthy, supportive mentor-mentee relationships. The program saw enthusiastic involvement from 60 faculty members and 150 students, reflecting a genuinely collaborative academic effort. 

The program was coordinated by Prof. Mandeep Kaur and Prof. Akanksha Juneja, along with the organising committee members, Prof. Eram Perwez, Prof. Shabina Sachdeva, Prof. Vivek Mehta, and Prof. Mohd. Saleem.
