JMI organizes Online Extension Lecture on “Women, Gender, and Social Change: Perspectives from the Global South”

The lecture was attended by faculties, students, activists, and scholars from different academic institutions in India and abroad.. Dr. Amina Hussain moderated the Q&A session. Prof. S.N. Fatmi proposed the vote of thanks.

The Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies (SNCWS) Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised an Online International Extension Lecture by Prof. R.W. Connell, Professor Emerita, University of Sydney, on “Women, Gender, and Social Change: Perspectives from the Global South”. Prof. Bulbul-Dhar James, Hony. Director SNCWS, JMI presented the welcome remarks and chaired the session and the convenor was Dr. Abhiruchi Ojha.

The online international extension lecture focused on the need for a world perspective on the making of knowledge, significance of indigenous knowledge systems pertaining to gender studies, and the problem of global-North hegemony in the knowledge ecosystem. Prof Connell gave a number of examples of creative research in Masculinity Studies from different parts of the world, including South and Central America, the Arab world, and South and South-east Asia. The lecture ended with discussion about the current international backlash against this field, issues of inequality, gender justice, deconstructing knowledge hierarchy, and how we can respond.
