New Delhi :- The UGC – Human Resource Development Centre (UGC – HRDC), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in collaboration with the Department of Geography and the Department of Environmental Science, JMI successfully organized a two-week Refresher Course in ‘Geography and Environmental Studies’ in online mode from October 26 to November 8, 2023.
The Inaugural Session of the course was organized on October 26, 2023. The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC – Human Resource Development Centre (UGC – HRDC), JMI. The occasion was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest, Prof. M. H. Qureshi, former Professor of Geography in Jawaharlal Nehru University; the Guest of Honour Prof. M. Ishtiaque, former Vice-Chancellor of Magadh University and Prof. C. J. Rawandale, the Director of the Symbiosis Law School, Noida. The dignitaries highlighted the need for interdisciplinary research and collaboration in the field of geography and environmental studies, within the overarching context of climate change, global warming and sustainable development. The Course Outline was presented by Dr. Asif, Course Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, JMI. Prof. Haroon Sajjad, Session Chair and the Head of the Department (HOD) of Geography, JMI presented Chair Remarks. The Vote of Thanks for the inaugural session was formally presented by Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, JMI.
The Refresher Course witnessed the participation of 26 faculty members from across the nation. A total of 44 sessions were conducted during the course, which included 37 sessions of lectures delivered by the experts from various Central and State Universities, Institutes of National Importance (INIs) and specialized research institutions. The lectures culminated into 6 sessions of presentations, created and delivered by the participants so as to fulfil the objectives of the programme through participatory approach. A Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) based test was conducted to assess the delivery and reception of the content delivered across the duration of the course.
The Valedictory Session of the refresher course was organized on November 8, 2023. Prof. Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC – Human Resource Development Centre (UGC – HRDC), JMI welcomed the guests and the participants. The Chief Guest of the session was Dr. K. J. Ramesh, former Director of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Ministry of Earth Sciences. Dr. Ramesh in his valedictory address laid emphasis on the urgent need for research on climate sustainability. Dr. Kalachand Sain, Director of the Wadia Institute of Geology, Dehradun was the Guest of Honour. In his address Dr. Sain stressed on the hazard management and disaster mitigation as the need of the hour. Dr. Asif, Course Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, JMI presented a brief report of the Course. Special remarks on the refresher course were delivered by Prof. Sirajuddin Ahmad, the Head of the Department (HOD) of Environmental Science, JMI. The Chair Remarks were presented by the Session Chair, Prof. Haroon Sajjad, the Head of the Department (HOD) of Geography, JMI. The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Dr. Sajid Ali, Course Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science, JMI.
