New Delhi :- The Department of Biosciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a two-day Symposia & Workshop on "Current Era of Bioinformatics” on the 09th and 10th of October 2023. The underlying theme of the symposia was the Innovative Advancements in Bioinformatics. The chief guest and key-note speaker of the symposia was Prof. R. N. K. Bamezai a Padma Shri Awardee and the former Dean at the School of L ife sciences, JNU. Dr. Bamezai inaugurated the conference and gave a key-note address on the importance of understanding biomedical problems with advanced bioinformatics and computational biology tools. Prof. Pawan Kumar Dhar, Head of the Synthetic Biology group at the School of Biotechnology, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, gave a talk on the importance of systems biology. Prof. Dinesh Gupta (ICGEB), New Delhi, Prof. Shailja Singh (JNU) and Dr Kalaiarasan Ponnusamy (NCDC) New Delhi were some of the other speakers.
Hands-on training was provided to about 162 participants who represented universities like DU, JNU, AMU, Jamia Hamdard, IP, Amity, and Gautam Budh Universities. The areas covered during the program included Next Generation Sequencing data analysis, Structural Bioinformatics, Systems and Synthetic Biology, Deep learning, Synthetic biology tools and techniques, Integrating 3D Structural Information into Systems Biology and Computational modelling in biological systems. Hands-on training sessions were guided by Dr. Siddharth Manvati (CEO and co-founder of Clear Meat) and Dr. Neeraj Verma (Clear Meat), Dr Shazia Haider (Assistant Professor, JMI) & Dr. Kalairasan Ponnusamy (NCDC, New Delhi).
Prof. Mohammad Zahid Ashraf, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences,JMI and Prof. Aman Jairajpuri, Head, Department of Biosciences, JMI presided over the functions. Dr. Shazia Haider and Dr. Mohammad Abid were the conveners of the Symposia and workshop.
