JMI organises Skill Enhancement Workshop for Research Scholars

The workshop was held in offline mode in the computer lab of the Department.

New Delhi :- The Department of Economics, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised a one-day Skill Enhancement workshop on “Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Data Science and Research” on 8th December, 2023 as a part of Departmental Social Responsibility (DSR). The program has got overwhelming response from young faculty members and research scholars across the departments/centres of JMI such as Department of Social Work, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Economics, Centre for International Relations, Centre for Physiotherapy, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Architecture etc. The workshop was held in offline mode in the computer lab of the Department.

Prof. Muslim Khan, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, JMI was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function. He commenced his inaugural address by narrating the philosophy of research starting from Ancient Greek Philosophers- Socrates and Plato to the present. He emphasised the significance of “data” in the present data driven world and explained proper use of data to enhance the authenticity of results derived. He also stressed the need for having societal applications of research.

Prof. Asheref Illiyan, Head, Department of Economics JMI & Workshop Director, in his opening remarks emphasised the importance of such workshops for a cutting edge research across the disciplines and for research skill enhancement. He also highlighted the importance of learning intuitive logic behind research tools and effective interpretation of statistical reults.

Prof. Moonis Shakeel, Department of Economics, JMI & organising secretary elaborated importance of data management and presented an overview of the SPSS software. Dr,Md. Zakaria Siddiqui, Associate  Professor, Department of Economics, JMI &coordinator of the workshop explained foundational aspects of sampling theory to set the stage for hypothesis testing for making informed decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of the research hypothesis along with the practical examples.

Dr,Mohd Kashif Khan, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, JMI &coordinator of the workshop, elaborated different types of  non- parametric tests such as Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney Wilcoxon test and Kruskal Wallis test and their applications in empirical research.

Prof. Saba Ismail, Department of Economics JMI & organising secretary, has given a very extensive explanation and justification of uses of correlation and regression analysis and how to execute them in SPSS.

Dr. Vasim Akram, Department of Economics JMI & organising secretary dealt upon subject specific case studies. 

The Workshop was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Md Zakaria Siddiqui.
