JMI organises ‘Samagra Swa Raksha’ Capacity Building Workshop for Women and Girls

The Samagra- Swa Raksha - A 5-day Capacity Building Workshop for Women and Girls in collaboration with the CaW (Crime against Women) Cell of the Delhi Police

 

New Delhi: The Samagra- Swa Raksha - A 5 day Capacity Building Workshop for Women and Girls in collaboration with the CaW ( Crime against Women) Cell of the Delhi Police was organised by the Political Science Department of the university from  21st to 25th November, 2022. An impressive Valedictory Ceremony was held today in the Lawns of the Dayar -e -Mir Taqi mir, JMI.

In the Welcome Address, Prof. Bulbul Dhar- James, Department of Political Science, JMI & Coordinator of the Workshop, spoke of the desperate need of addressing the societal of instances of harassment of girls and women, many of which go unreported and ultimately result in terrible atrocities against girls and women. A solution to Violence against Women is providing safe spaces for women and giving them tools for empowerment and the best way was to teach them self-defence skills along with gender sensitization.  The workshop was designed to be a comprehensive – SAMAGRA understanding of contextualising gender and gender based violence. She emphasised that violence is not just a biological or a physical act – it is rooted in our Culture and Society through patriarchal beliefs / stereotypes, myths that we need to shatter.

With the Police Head Constables taking the Physical Self Defence module, the Gender sensitization Sessions were taken by faculty across the departments and Centres on concerns like historical disadvantage in the name of preserving customary practice, Unpacking the loaded concept of gender including LGBTQ+, Gender based violence , silence ,stigma and shame Laws for women, Stereotypes, Masculinity, Mental health Concerns amongst so many other.

Prof Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, JMI was the Chief Guest who presented over 60 participating girls with Certificates and emphasised the relevance of the programme. She said this would be a constant activity with a multiplier effect that JMI would be undertaking. She appreciated the Political Science Department and the coordinating team led by Prof Bulbul Dhar for this very successful endeavour.

The participating girl students were from Schools, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Masters as well as Doctoral Research Scholars who in the feedback Session exuberantly expressed their appreciation of what they called a “once in a lifetime experience” that has changed their whole perspective and they expressed a wish for More – Many more such empowering workshops in future.
