New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has launched a two-semester Advanced Diploma in Child Guidance and Counselling, accredited by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), to meet the growing demand for trained child counsellors and guidance professionals. The programme was formally inaugurated with an Orientation Programme for newly admitted students.
The initiative received strong support from Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif, whose vision and encouragement played a crucial role in conceptualising the programme. Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi also offered consistent guidance throughout the accreditation and launch process.
VC and Registrar Laud Department’s Efforts
In his inaugural address, Prof. Rizvi praised the Department of Psychology for its dedication in securing the rigorous RCI accreditation and organizing the orientation. Highlighting the role of faith in mental health, he noted that belief in higher powers often helps reduce anxiety and stress. He congratulated Prof. Samina Bano, Head of the Department, and Prof. Sheema Aleem, Diploma Coordinator, assuring full administrative support.
Course Aims to Create Skilled Counsellors
Prof. Mohd. Muslim Khan, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, shared insights into Jamia’s rich academic history and extended his best wishes for the success of the new programme.
Welcoming the students, Prof. Samina Bano and Prof. Sheema Aleem expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and Registrar for their unwavering support. They also acknowledged the contributions of Prof. Bharti Sharma (Course Coordinator), Dr. Faizullah Khan, and Mr. Prateek Kumar (RCI Programme Officer) during the accreditation process.
Prof. Bano expressed hope that students would become strong ambassadors of the university, while Prof. Aleem highlighted that the programme is one of its kind among central universities—designed to develop competent professional counsellors and uphold high standards in the counselling field.
