New Delhi :- Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) discussed potential academic partnership between the two during an online meeting held on 9th August, 2023. From JMI’s side the meeting was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar (Padma Shri), some Deans and officials of the university.
From UNLV, USA, Prof. Rama Venkat, Dean, Howard Hughes College of Engineering, Mohammad Tarabia, Associate Dean for Research, Graduate Studies and Computing, Robert Ulmer, Dean, Urban Affairs, Jian Yingtao, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programmes and Jaekeun Cho, Director of Engineering International Programmes from University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) attended this important meeting.
JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar started her address by expressing her gratitude for the keenness shown by UNLV officials for showing keen interest for the development of an academic partnership between the two prestigious institutions.
Prof. Akhtar briefly talked about recent achievements of JMI and the potential that exists for academic and research cooperation between the two institutions. The institution has developed over a period of 102 years and has emerged as an institution of eminence attracting students from different parts of India and has also attracted overseas students from over 35 countries.
She further said that the two institutions can come together for academic cooperation and research in different fields of learning like the Faculty of Management Studies can work with the Lee Business School of UNLV for promotion of marketing entrepreneurship and international business studies. The Faculty of Dentistry can collaborate with the School of Dental Medicine at UNLV for Advanced Education in Oral Health Care Services to the community. The Faculty of Education can work with the Department of Early Childhood and Special Education of UNLV besides cooperating in the areas of leadership development and higher education. The Faculty of Engineering in JMI can work very closely with Howard Hughes College of Engineering to strengthen foundational learning in several engineering disciplines through hands-on experiential education experience. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNLV can also play a very crucial role in the promotion of Environmental Studies in both the institutions.
The Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture can collaborate with the College of Fine Arts at UNLV to prepare students for professional growth and employment. The Mass Communication Research Centre which is a flagship centre in JMI would be keen to collaborate with a College of Fine Arts at UNLV and for development of Entertainment Engineering and Design.
The Faculty of Management Studies in JMI has a robust Department of Tourism and Hospitality that can work with William Harrah College of Hospitality at UNLV to create new a benchmark in the Hospitality Management Programmes by blending classroom and real world experiences.
“There are many areas of academic research convergence between JMI and UNLV that could be explored through discussions for potential joint-research activities and also for exchange of faculty and students and research on mutually acceptable terms and conditions”, said the Vice Chancellor.
The online meeting was only the beginning of a process that will fructify into a meaningful academic and research collaboration between JMI and UNLV in weeks ahead in the form of an MoU.
