Shaping Futures with Heart and Vision: An Interview with Mrs. Mala Sood

The Principal of AGDAV School shares her insights on technology, values, and the evolving role of education in preparing children for life.

Mrs. Mala Sood, Principal of AGDAV School, is a visionary educator who believes that education is not just about academics; it's about values, empathy, and preparing students for life. In a candid conversation with our reporter Dyanshi Sharma, she shares her thoughts on technology, pedagogy, and the future of education. Here are some highlights from the interview.

~ What do you think will be the biggest challenges and opportunities for education leaders in the coming years?

"Children today are digital natives, they learn faster, adapt more quickly, and are immersed in technology from a young age. Teachers, however, come from a different generation. Bridging that gap is a challenge, but also a tremendous opportunity. If educators stay updated and guide students wisely, we can offer them the best of both worlds, modern learning grounded in timeless values."

~ How do you see AI (Artificial Intelligence) being used in classrooms?

"AI is an incredible tool, but it should never replace the process of learning. Students should first attempt tasks on their own and then use AI to enhance and refine their work. That way, they build understanding and don’t become overly dependent. Unfortunately, many children get access to devices too early, without proper guidance. It’s crucial to integrate AI thoughtfully with teachers and parents playing an active role in helping students use it responsibly."

~ What are your thoughts on competency-based education?

"Competency-based learning shouldn’t begin only after Class 12, it should start much earlier. At DAV, we introduce skill-based assessments and sample papers from the primary levels. If students grow up with this approach, they’ll enter the future with confidence and clarity."

~ How do you balance traditional teaching with new technology?

"Today, even teachers are learners! We evolve alongside our students. Through AI-powered smart boards and regular teacher training, we blend traditional teaching with modern methods. Our goal is simple: equip students for the future while keeping them rooted in strong values."

~ What aspects of online or blended learning will schools retain post-pandemic?

"Online learning created a new comfort zone for many students. For example, a shy student might feel more comfortable participating virtually. Education is no longer confined to school hours it’s a 24/7 process. That flexibility and accessibility are something we’ll definitely continue."

~ How does your school promote empathy and social responsibility?

"A school isn’t just about academics, it’s also about community. Our students regularly organize health check-up camps, visit orphanages and senior homes, and participate in social initiatives. These experiences teach them kindness, gratitude, and emotional resilience."

~ Why is it important to teach students how to use technology wisely?

"Technology is powerful, but it can be dangerous without proper awareness. We conduct regular cyber safety workshops so students understand potential risks. At the same time, we encourage exploration so they can learn to make informed choices. Striking the right balance is essential."

~ Do you have a message for parents and students?

“Life is precious, live it calmly and without pressure. Respect your elders, contribute to society, and always stay true to yourself. Do things that make you proud, honor every emotion, and remember; life is uncertain, so make every moment count.”

Mrs. Sood’s leadership reflects a beautiful blend of modern thinking and timeless wisdom. Her perspective reminds us that the future of education isn’t just about smart classrooms or AI tools; it’s about shaping compassionate, confident, and conscious individuals.
