IIT Mandi Forges Strategic Collaborations for Academic and Research Advancement

All these collaborations are initially set for a period of five years and have the potential for renewal upon agreement by both partner institutions.

MANDI, 9th November 2023: With an aim to foster academic excellence and cutting-edge research, Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) has entered into a series of Memorandum of Understandings. The collaborations include individual agreements with Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, NIT Uttarakhand, and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Longowal, respectively.

Speaking about IIT Mandi’s collaboration to boost academic and research collaboration, Dr. Kumar Sambhav Pandey, Registrar, IIT Mandi, said, “IIT Mandi is aggressively pursuing academic, research, and entrepreneurial alliances with suitable organizations nationally as well as globally, with twin objectives. Primarily, we aim to enhance faculty and student exchanges to foster greater collaborations at all levels. Secondly, we aim to expand the footprint of IIT Mandi far and wide.”

Memorandum of Understanding with Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad

This MoU outlines a collaborative agreement for research and academic interactions that lead to higher qualifications and research projects relevant to the defence sector.

Under this collaboration, DRDL will be considered an associated Research Center of IIT Mandi. IIT Mandi will facilitate off-campus Ph.D./M.Tech (Research) registrations for candidates selected by DRDL, who will be engaged in full-time research at DRDL.

Another noteworthy aspect of this collaboration is the student exchange program. Scientific/Engineering Officers from DRDL interested in pursuing M. Tech. (Research) or Ph.D. studies at IIT Mandi, will have the opportunity to apply as external candidates or part-time doctoral students based on their suitability and merit. Simultaneously, students from IIT Mandi will have the option to work at DRDL for their M.Tech./Ph.D. projects, dissertations, or theses in areas related to the defence sector. Additionally, Ph.D./M.Tech. (Research) students enrolled at IIT Mandi will have the flexibility to conduct a portion of their research work at DRDL.

On the research collaboration front, DRDL and IIT Mandi will jointly explore research projects under the R&D schemes of the relevant Ministry/Department, which are being implemented through DRDL. Joint workshops and seminars will also be an integral part of this collaboration.

Memorandum of Understanding with NIT Uttarakhand

This MoU establishes a collaborative partnership between both institutions in the realms of academics and research. The agreement encompasses the exchange of academic and scholarly information, student and faculty exchange programs, and joint research endeavors on topics of mutual interest and significance, featuring Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs) from both institutions.

A significant highlight of this MoU is the opportunity provided to NIT Uttarakhand Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) students. They can explore the option to take courses at IIT Mandi and be considered for early admission to the PhD program without the requirement to qualify in the GATE examination or any other national-level examination. This initiative aims to enable meritorious NIT Uttarakhand B.Tech students to undertake a portion of their studies, including project work, at IIT Mandi.
