Hansraj College Suspends Around 30 Students After Fest Row, Delhi University Students' Union Calls Move Undemocratic

Hansraj College suspends around 30 students, including union leaders, over fest-related misconduct. DUSU calls the move an attack on student democracy.

New Delhi.: A major controversy has surfaced at University of Delhi after Hansraj College placed nearly 30 students under interim suspension, including four elected student union office-bearers, over alleged misconduct during the college’s annual fest.

The development has sparked intense debate across campus, with student leaders alleging suppression of democratic voices, while the college administration maintains the action was necessary to uphold discipline.

 Disciplinary Action by College

According to official communications, the suspensions were issued between April 20 and April 25, 2026.

The affected students:

  • Are barred from entering campus during the suspension period
  • Are allowed only for exams and internal assessments
  • Will remain suspended until further notice or completion of inquiry

The college has clarified that these are interim measures, pending disciplinary proceedings.

 Reasons Behind the Suspensions

The administration cited multiple allegations linked to incidents during the annual fest held on April 8–9, including:

  • Defamation of the institution on social media
  • Use of inappropriate language against staff
  • Acts of indiscipline
  • Alleged physical altercations
  • Disruption of campus order

A series of notices were issued in phases, eventually bringing the number of suspended students to around 30.

 Sequence of Notices

  • April 20: Initial notice issued against one student
  • Subsequent notices: 14 students named for alleged misconduct
  • April 25: Four elected student union representatives suspended

All suspensions were enforced with immediate effect.

 Strong Reaction from Student Leaders

The move has drawn sharp criticism from Delhi University Students' Union.

DUSU President Aryaman Sai termed the action a “direct attack on student democracy”, alleging misuse of administrative authority.

He argued that campuses should remain spaces for dialogue, dissent, and accountability, and questioned whether student leaders were being targeted for raising issues or criticising the administration.

Why This Matters Beyond One College

The issue has quickly escalated into a broader discussion within University of Delhi, raising key concerns such as:

  • Limits of student protests and expression
  • Role of elected student unions
  • Balance between discipline and democratic participation
  • Transparency in disciplinary processes

Given Hansraj College’s prominence within Delhi University, the controversy is likely to influence campus politics and policy debates across colleges.

 What Lies Ahead

Since the suspensions are temporary, further internal inquiries and hearings will determine the final outcome—whether the action is withdrawn, revised, or made permanent.

Meanwhile, student groups continue to demand greater transparency and due process in the matter.

 A Growing Campus Flashpoint

The Hansraj College episode has become a flashpoint in university politics, highlighting the ongoing tension between maintaining institutional discipline and protecting student voices.

As developments unfold, the case may set important precedents for student rights, campus governance, and freedom of expression in Indian higher education.
