New Delhi. : The Higher Education Department has proposed a three-year deadline for guest lecturers in government colleges to obtain mandatory qualifications under University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, following a recent High Court order.
5,500 lecturers at risk
The court directive makes PhD or NET/KSET qualifications compulsory for appointment as lecturers. With over 5,500 guest lecturers currently lacking these credentials, the ruling has created widespread uncertainty about their future employment.
Temporary extension under discussion
In a joint meeting of the Higher Education and Law departments, officials suggested extending the tenure of guest lecturers for the current academic year. This measure is intended to provide immediate relief while lecturers work toward fulfilling the eligibility criteria.
Humanitarian considerations
Authorities are also weighing options to retain lecturers on humanitarian grounds, citing the need to protect livelihoods while ensuring compliance with UGC rules. The Chief Minister is expected to hold further discussions before a final decision is taken.
Balancing standards and livelihoods
The proposed three-year grace period reflects the government’s attempt to uphold academic standards while safeguarding the interests of thousands of educators, offering a middle path between legal mandates and practical realities.
