Four BDS students of JMI gets ICMR Short Term Studentship (ICMR STS 2023) grant approvals

In synchronization with the vision of JMI, the research ecosystem of the Faculty prophesies more successful accomplishments in the coming years.

New Delhi :- It is a matter of great pride that four students of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have been awarded research grant approvals for the year 2023- 24 under the prestigious Short Term Studentship (STS 2023) scheme by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi.

The Short Term Studentship (STS) program, an initiative by ICMR, aims to encourage and support MBBS/BDS students towards health research. This provides an opportunity to undergraduate medical/dental students to familiarize themselves with research methodology and techniques by being associated with mentors/research faculty for a short duration on an ongoing research program. The value/ stipend awards to the student for the studentship for the year 2023 is Rs. 25,000/- per month for two months’ duration.

The Faculty of Dentistry has been at the forefront of encouraging research among the undergraduate students, with 12 students being awarded the prestigious ICMR-STS awards over the last 9 years. These awards have focused on dental as well as interdisciplinary topics such as COVID-19, temporomandibular joint, aphthous stomatitis, dental erosion, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. The student awardees carry out the research over a period of two months under the mentorship and guidance of their faculty guides.

The result of the ICMR-STS 2023 programme was declared on the official website of the ICMR www.icmr.nic.in on 14 th August 2023. This year, out of more than fifteen thousand submitted projects for undergraduate research grants, four students from Faculty of Dentistry- Ishita Singh, Deepali Garg, Snehal Sharma and Tarun Sharma were awarded the ICMR-STS 2023 grants. They will be carrying out the research under the guidance of faculty mentors, Prof (Dr) Mohammad Faisal, Prof (Dr) Shamimul Hasan, Prof (Dr) Harneet Kaur and Dr Vatchala Rani.

Within a short span of 13 years since inception, the Faculty of Dentistry currently ranks 10 th amongst all the Dental colleges of India as per the NIRF 2023 rankings. This is reflective of the focus and determination of the Faculty towards oral health research, dental education and outreach services to the community.
