New Delhi : With just weeks remaining before the new academic session begins, Delhi University (DU) is scrambling to address critical gaps in infrastructure, including labs, classrooms, and course plans, as it prepares to introduce the fourth year of its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) in August.
Vice-Chancellor Assures Readiness, But Challenges Remain
DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh acknowledged the concerns but assured that necessary arrangements would be made. “The concerns are genuine. This is the first time we are introducing research, entrepreneurship, and skill-based learning at this level. While faculty members are anxious, this fourth year will be a game-changer for undergraduate education in India,” he told PTI.
However, teachers and students remain apprehensive. Many colleges lack upgraded laboratories, libraries, and learning resources required for the extended programme. Some fear that incomplete syllabi and inadequate planning could lead to confusion and even higher dropout rates among students uncertain about the programme’s benefits.
Faculty and Students Express Doubts
Teachers’ associations have raised alarms over the university’s preparedness, citing a lack of funding and additional workload without proper support. “Without adequate infrastructure and clear academic guidelines, the fourth year could become a burden rather than a benefit,” said a faculty member.
Despite the challenges, the VC urged students to enroll without hesitation, promising that facilities would be arranged. “If resources are lacking now, they will be provided. This transition is in the best interest of our students,” he said.
A Crucial Test for NEP 2020 Reforms
The FYUP expansion is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reforms, aiming to promote multi-disciplinary learning, research, and skill development at the undergraduate level. However, with the academic session set to begin in August, DU’s ability to address logistical and academic hurdles will determine whether the new structure succeeds or falls short of expectations.
As the deadline looms, all eyes are on Delhi University to deliver on its promises and ensure a smooth transition into this new phase of undergraduate education.
