CUH Hosts Two Day Seminar on War, Tariff and Globalisation in Fragmented World Order

Central University of Haryana inaugurates a two-day seminar on “War and Tariff: Revisiting Globalisation in a Fragmented World Order,” focusing on modern warfare, tariff wars, and geopolitical challenges.

Mahendragarh: The Department of Political Science, Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendragarh, on Thursday inaugurated a two-day national seminar on the theme “War and Tariff: Revisiting Globalisation in a Fragmented World Order.”

Professor (Emeritus) Ashok Kaul from Banaras Hindu University graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while the programme was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar highlighted the changing nature of modern warfare and its deep interlinkages with energy security and technological advancements. He noted that warfare is no longer limited to conventional battlefields, but increasingly includes tariff wars and economic conflicts. Referring to current global tensions, he said nations are adopting diverse strategies to respond to these challenges, citing India’s efforts towards a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union as a significant initiative. He expressed confidence that the seminar would help students and research scholars gain deeper insights into global political and economic transformations.

In his keynote address, Prof. Ashok Kaul offered a comprehensive analysis of the historical, political, and sociological dimensions of global politics. He traced the origins of the modern nation-state system to the Treaty of Westphalia, discussed the evolution of borders and identity, and reflected on the failure of modern assumptions during the First and Second World Wars. Prof. Kaul also spoke about the erosion of ideologies, the rise of personality-centric politics, and underscored the inclusive and ethical worldview rooted in Indian traditions.

The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Prof. Payal Kanwar Chandel, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the relevance of war, tariffs, and globalisation in the contemporary world.
Prof. Rajeev Kumar Singh, Head of the Department of Political Science, elaborated on the objectives of the seminar, drawing references from Indian philosophical traditions. He highlighted the contradiction between rising global military expenditure and persistent issues such as hunger, citing the ideas of Tulsidas and Kautilya.

A plenary session on “Geopolitics and Fragmentation of the Global Order” was also held, featuring Dr. Amit Singh (JNU), Dr. Shreya Pandey, Dr. Dheeraj Mani Pathak (St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi), Dr. Uday Bhadoria (ISPG College), and Dr. Alok Kumar Singh (JIIT Noida). The speakers analysed contemporary geopolitical conflicts, power rivalries, and their implications for the global order.

The discussions highlighted that war and strategic competition are accelerating the fragmentation of globalisation. Academicians, research scholars, and students from universities across the country actively participated in the seminar.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Ramesh Kumar. Several distinguished faculty members, including Prof. Ranjan Aneja, Dr. Manoj Mishra, Dr. Abhiranjan Kumar, Dr. Vikas Siwach, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, and Dr. Ravi Pratap Pandey, were present on the occasion.
