UNNAO : In a major boost to India’s AI education and innovation ecosystem, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday inaugurated the country’s first private Artificial Intelligence-augmented multidisciplinary university in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The university, established by Chandigarh University, marks a significant step in advancing technical education and innovation in the state.
The launch is part of the state government’s ambitious AI Pragya scheme, under which 10 lakh individuals are to be trained in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity. The initiative targets a broad demographic, including youth, teachers, village leaders, government employees, and farmers. The goal is to train 1.5 lakh people every month, with training support from global tech leaders such as Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Guvi.
The university will play a central role in equipping Uttar Pradesh’s workforce with future-ready digital skills and drive AI adoption across critical sectors.
According to an official statement, AI is being rapidly integrated into governance and public services across the state. In public safety, the Safe City Project has equipped 17 city corporations with AI-powered CCTV surveillance, automatic number plate recognition systems, SOS alerts, and facial recognition technology, all integrated with the 112 emergency helpline for real-time response.
In agriculture, the Rs 4,000 crore UP-AGRIS project, supported by the World Bank, is leveraging AI tools such as smart irrigation, drone-based land mapping, and pest detection systems to benefit 10 lakh farmers. The project also supports 10,000 women’s self-help groups and connects farmer-producer organisations to digital marketplaces.
AI applications are also transforming governance. The Revenue Department is using satellite imaging and AI for land record management and village-level digital mapping. In correctional services, an AI system named ‘Jarvis’ has been deployed in 70 prisons to monitor inmate activities. Meanwhile, the Geology and Mining Department is implementing AI and IoT-based tools to enhance mining regulation and oversight.
With these multi-sectoral AI applications and the launch of a dedicated AI university, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a national leader in AI-driven development and skill empowerment.
