Delhi Government Begins Admissions for Atal Drishti Girls’ Hostel for Visually Impaired Students

New Delhi: With the new academic session approaching, the Delhi government has initiated the admission process for the Atal Drishti Girls’ Hostel in Timarpur, a dedicated residential facility designed specifically for visually impaired young women pursuing higher education in the capital.

The initiative, run by the Department of Social Welfare, aims to support students who relocate to Delhi for studies but struggle to secure accommodation in college hostels. The specialised facility ensures a safe, accessible, and supportive environment for students with visual impairments, enabling them to focus on academic growth without financial or logistical constraints.

Strict Eligibility Criteria Announced

According to the official notification, admission to the hostel is governed by stringent eligibility conditions:

  • Only unmarried, totally blind female students are eligible.
  • Applicants must be below 25 years of age and bonafide residents of Delhi.
  • Partially blind students and those enrolled in correspondence or evening courses are not covered under the scheme.
  • Applicants must have completed Class 12 from a recognised board or have graduated from a Delhi University college.
  • Blind daughters of government or defence personnel posted outside Delhi may be considered, depending on seat availability.

Admission will be granted only after an interview conducted by the admission committee, whose decision will be final. Selected students must submit a refundable caution deposit of ₹500 or a surety bond of the same amount.

Admission Not Guaranteed; Re-Admission Required Annually

The Social Welfare Department has clarified that admission or re-admission cannot be claimed as a right. The hostel will not accept mid-session admissions, and students must apply within 30 days of the notification being uploaded on the department’s website.

Residents are also required to seek re-admission every academic year, and continuation will depend on adherence to hostel rules, discipline, and overall conduct.

A Major Infrastructure Investment

The Atal Drishti Girls’ Hostel, constructed at a cost of ₹13.42 crore, was inaugurated in September during the Seva Pakhwada celebrations near Delhi University in Timarpur. The project marks a significant step by the Delhi government in improving accessibility and creating focused support systems for visually impaired women striving for higher education.

By offering dedicated residential facilities, the initiative seeks to eliminate barriers and encourage more visually impaired girls to pursue academic and professional opportunities in the capital.
