- Over 1 Lakh Uttar Pradesh Class 4 Students to Use NCERT Books from 2026–27
Lucknow, October 2025: The Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department has announced that more than one lakh Class 4 students in government primary schools will start using NCERT textbooks from the 2026–27 academic session. The move is part of a broader effort to align state education with the National Curriculum Framework and improve learning outcomes across the state.
The department is implementing the NCERT curriculum in phases. Currently, Class 3 students are studying from NCERT books in the 2025–26 session, following similar reforms for Classes 1 and 2 last year. To support this transition, a separate tender has been floated for publishing and distributing NCERT textbooks and workbooks free of cost for Classes 1 to 4.
New NCERT Textbooks to Be Introduced for Class 4
From the upcoming session, Class 4 students will receive an all-new set of NCERT books, including:
- Veena (Hindi Language)
- Santoor (English)
- Ganit Mela (Mathematics)
- Hamara Adbhut Sansar (Environmental Studies)
- Sanskrit Sudha
- Bansuri (Art Education)
- Riyazi (Urdu)
Each subject will be accompanied by corresponding workbooks designed to promote interactive and experiential learning. The publishing and supply process has already begun to ensure timely delivery of books before the new academic year starts on April 1, 2026.
Experts from the State Institute of Education, Institute of English Language Teaching, and the State Hindi Institute are adapting the NCERT content to suit Uttar Pradesh’s linguistic and cultural context. The final versions will be reviewed and approved by NCERT prior to printing.
Digital Learning Tools Remain Underused
While the state is modernizing its curriculum, officials have expressed concern over the underutilization of digital learning infrastructure in schools. Despite the installation of 7,409 smart classrooms, 4,686 ICT labs, and 570 digital libraries in recent years, many remain largely unused.
Monica Rani, Director of School Education, has directed district officials to identify ten schools in each district with minimal use of digital tools. Headmasters of these schools will be required to explain their non-compliance.
The Director General of School Education has also mandated regular reviews to ensure that digital facilities — developed through substantial public investment — are effectively integrated into the teaching process for students’ benefit.
Ayurveda to Be Integrated into School Health Education
In a parallel initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government is collaborating with NCERT and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to develop Ayurveda-based course modules for schools and colleges.
The objective is to introduce students to holistic health concepts rooted in traditional Indian wisdom, blending them with modern scientific principles. The state aims to nurture awareness about preventive health and well-being from an early age, promoting a balanced and culturally informed approach to education
