Bengaluru : The Karnataka government on Thursday issued an official government order allowing the Karnataka State Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) to conduct exam 1,2 and 3 – a total of three annual examinations- for Class 10 (SSLC) and Class 12 (second PUC) students. The order will be effective for the current academic year 2023-24. With this the school education department of Karnataka will be doing away with the concept of supplementary examination for SSLC and second PUC.
The main objective for the examination reform is to help students destress and improve the overall performance of the students in both the levels.
At present, if a student who has qualified the second PUC examination and is not satisfied with the marks obtained, there is a provision to reject the marks obtained in the annual examination and only the marks scored in the supplementary examination are considered as the final marks of the student, without considering the marks obtained in the previous examination.
Dubbing it as ‘student unfriendly mechanism’, it is on this basis that the board introduced a remedial system allowing the students to retain the best score obtained in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd examinations.
The opportunity aims to give students a better scope for higher education and employment. The move is also seen as a factor to improve the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education in Karnataka.
As per the guidelines laid down by the government in the order, students can take SSLC and second PUC annual examinations with an annual class attendance of 75 per cent. Those who have less than 75 per cent attendance will not be eligible to write the exam.
Freshers and private candidates taking the exam for the first time in all subjects, must attempt the main examination (exam 1) and cannot directly appear for exam 2 and exam 3. The board has also fixed one time examination fee for the annual examination and issuance of mark sheets to those students who passed SSLC and Class 12. The board has directed officials not to take the fee for the second time if the student appears in the following exams.
Meanwhile, SSLC and second PUC students who do not clear the mains, will have to sit for the following examinations as per the existing examination mechanism. Meanwhile, officials will have to upload the marks of the students in the Digi Locker system after completion of respective examinations.
As per the tentative schedule announced by the board, for class 12, exam 1 will be conducted between March 1 and 25; exam 2 between May 15 and June 5; exam 3 on July 12 and 30. For class 10, exam 1 is tentatively scheduled between March 30 and April 15; exam 2 between June 12 and 18 and exam 3 between July 29 and August 5.
