SSN’s Faculty Feature in Stanford University’s List of World’s Top 2% Scientists Second Time in a Row

  • Prof. Senthil Kumar is the youngest Indian scientist and is the top ranked among the 3353 professors from India in the list  

 

Chennai, 14 December 2021: For the second time in a row, faculty from SSN College of Engineering have been ranked among the top 2% scientists in the world as per a list compiled by Stanford University, USA. Four researchers who made to the list include Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, Professor, Department of Chemical Engg; Dr. P. Ramasamy, Dean Research, Dr. A.K. Lakshminarayanan Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engg and Dr. M. Gulam Nabi Alsath Associate Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engg. Among those featured, Prof. P. Senthil Kumar is the youngest Indian scientist to feature in the list for the second consecutive year.

About the four researchers featured in the list:

·         Dr. Ponnusamy Senthil Kumar ranked globally at 8288, moved up the ranks by 4,160 from last year. As one of India’s youngest scientists in the list, Dr. Kumar’s research primarily focuses on ground-breaking technology around wastewater management and optimizing agro-waste. In a career spanning just over a decade, Dr. Senthil has published more than 250 research papers in reputed international publications with an authors h-index of 54 including 11000 citations and authored more than 100 National/International Conference Publications, and 100 book chapters. Dr. Senthil lead the Centre of Excellence in Water Research (CEWAR) to promote water research.

 

·         Dr. P. Ramasamy, is the Dean of Research at SSN College of Engineering and a highly acclaimed scientist who has been previously honored with Niels Bohr International Gold Medal by UNESCO, The Khwarizmi International Award by Islamic Republic of IRAN Prize and ‘Most Productive Scientists in India’ by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). In a research career spanning close to five decades, Prof Ramasamy has published more than 950 papers. He has nurtured over 90 doctoral students and has authored seven books. He has got 71 projects from various funding agencies like DST, SERB, AICTE, MNRE, DRDO, UGC, DAE etc with the total budget of Rs.2761.92 lakh. His deep involvement in crystal growth field resulted in the birth of a new method of Crystal Growth known after his name along with his student (Sankaranarayanan - Ramasamy (SR) method of crystal growth).  

 

·         Dr. A. K. Lakshminarayanan, an associate professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was ranked in Stanford University’s carrier list for the second consecutive year. He has published more than 75 research papers in reputed international journals on material joining of various similar and dissimilar materials combinations for automotive, nuclear, and defence applications. Currently working on “advanced materials processing and testing of friction stir welded joints and metal 3D printed components” in collaboration with the scientists from national research laboratories, professors from the University of Southampton UK, University of Manchester, UK, and the National University of Singapore.

 

·         DrGulam Nabi Alsath, Associate Professor, Electronics and Communication Engg, SSN CE, made it to the coveted list for the first time for his research in the development of novel communication systems via next-gen antennas and microwave components. He has also authored more than 80 research articles in leading research journals published by IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. Dr. Alsath has been an integral part of setting up the ‘Anechoic Chamber’  in the Department of ECE at SSN College of Engineering supported by Department of Science and Technology – Science and Engineering Research Board (DST-SERB) and AICTE Modernization and Removal of Obsolescence (MODROBS). This state-of-the-art facility used to test antennas is available in select premier institutes of India and is designed to simulate free space conditions by completely absorbing reflections of electromagnetic waves.

The list published by Stanford University contains names of Dr. P. Senthil Kumar (Rank: 48), Dr. P. Ramasamy (Rank: 1889), Dr. A. K. Lakshminarayanan (Rank: 2271), and Dr. Gulam Nabi Alsath (Rank: 3165) scientists from various fields and including 3353 researchers from India. The database created by experts at Stanford University is based on data from Scopus that ranks journals and gives a citation index.
