Punjab teachers intensify protest against state govt regarding pay scale gaps

Chandigarh : Throughout the state of Punjab, a teacher’s protest is picking up the fire. Under the banner of PFUCTO (Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers Association) the teachers of various colleges and universities are on a protest against the state government.
Punjab teachers are protesting for two demands. The first is against the undue delay in implementation of revised pay scales as per recommendations of the UGC 7th pay commission.
The second is on the decision of Punjab government delinking UGC pay scales, from the state’s institutions of higher learning.
The UGC pay scale of higher learning teachers was announced in 2017 and 2018; all the states except Punjab accepted the scale in 2019.
This means that the teachers protesting are not getting paid as per the pay scale notified by the UGC.
A part of the higher education grant comes directly from UGC and delinking would mean affecting that grant and thus affecting the higher education in the state.

A large number of teachers on under the leadership of PUTA (Panjab University Teachers Association) gathered at gate number 2 of the Panjab University today to raise their demands. PUTA leaders have asked teachers to observe complete “education bandh” till their demands are fulfilled.
The work in all educational institutions has been shut by these organizations. They say they will continue their protests until their demands are met.

PUTA on Friday would also march from Gandhi Bhawan from 12:00 pm onwards in an effort to intensify their protests.
