UP Board Unveils New Secure Answer Sheets to Curb Cheating in 2026 Board Exams
Lucknow : In a landmark move to eliminate cheating and ensure complete transparency in board examinations, the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (UP Board)—Asia’s largest education board—has introduced newly designed answer sheets for the 2026 Class 10 and Class 12 exams. This is the first time in over 100 years that the board has completely revamped its answer sheet format to dismantle the organised cheating network.
The 2026 board exams will be held from February 18 to March 12, with over 52 lakh students registered—27,50,945 for High School and 24,79,352 for Intermediate. To meet this scale, the board will print nearly 26 million new answer sheets, which will be dispatched to districts in January.
Last year, UP Board implemented a strict five-tier monitoring system to combat malpractice, which led nearly 5 lakh students to skip the examinations. Building on this effort, the board has now incorporated multiple layers of security directly into the answer sheets.
Enhanced Security to Prevent Tampering and Duplication
The UP Board has introduced a series of advanced safeguards to ensure that answer sheets cannot be exchanged, duplicated, or altered—addressing a longstanding challenge in board exam integrity.
According to UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh, the new layout has been engineered to eliminate any chance of answer sheet swapping, which has historically been used to facilitate cheating.
Each answer sheet carries the official monogram of the Secondary Education Council, making unauthorised reproduction virtually impossible. Additionally, the specialised printing technology can only be executed at designated government presses located in Prayagraj, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Rampur.
What’s New? Layout, Colour Codes, and Page Structure
In a significant usability and security upgrade, the answer sheets have transitioned from landscape to portrait orientation. The colour codes and page counts have also been changed to make identification clearer and prevent duplication:
- Intermediate ‘A’ Sheet: 24 pages, first page magenta
- Intermediate ‘B’ Sheet: 12 pages, green
- High School ‘A’ Sheet: 18 pages, brown
- High School ‘B’ Sheet: 12 pages, green
These visual distinctions make it easier for invigilators and evaluators to verify authenticity at a glance.
Improved Student Experience
Despite major structural changes, officials assure that the new answer sheets remain student-friendly. Bhagwati Singh noted that students can continue writing in the familiar format they have used previously, which will help them stay comfortable and improve performance.
Safeguarding Exam Integrity for 2026
The UP Board’s sweeping redesign is a direct response to recurring attempts at cheating and answer sheet manipulation. With these new security features, the board aims to create a safer and fairer examination environment for all students. Authorities expect that these reforms will significantly strengthen the credibility of the evaluation process in the 2026 board exams.
