Lucknow: In alignment with the Uttar Pradesh government's ongoing Mission Shakti initiative, the University of Lucknow has stepped forward with a series of programs aimed at promoting women's empowerment. Under the directives issued to Lucknow University, the university's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication hosted a significant program, contributing to the awareness drive under Phase 5 of Mission Shakti.
The highlight of the program was the screening of the short film “Seedhi Baat No Bakwaas”, which critically examines the portrayal of women in society including cinema. The film sheds light on the normalization of gender teasing, objectification, and the use of derogatory terms for women in popular culture. It aims to spark meaningful conversations about the role of media in shaping societal attitudes towards women.
During the program, Dr. Mukul Srivastava Head of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication provided a thought provoking insights on the status of women in India. He emphasized Bollywood's significant influence on public perceptions and the urgent need to address the industry’s contribution to perpetuating stereotypes and biases against women.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sourabh Malviya who is an associate professor at the department also emphasized on the role of women in society. Also, he urged everyone to follow humanitarian approach and requested to change their perception towards women.
The program was hosted by Dr. Neelu Sharma and Dr. Kritika Agrawal, who engaged the audience with their insights and facilitated discussions. Students from the Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC) program attended the event, adding their perspectives to the discourse.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by professors from the department, acknowledging the collective efforts of the faculty and students.
