New Delhi, December 17, 2024: India’s burgeoning space sector continues to witness transformative growth with private sector involvement. In a pivotal move to bolster innovation and foster a competitive global presence, the Ministry of Science & Technology has announced its support for Agnikul Cosmos Pvt. Ltd., a Chennai-based space technology start-up. Agnikul is set to develop and commercialize its state-of-the-art Agnibaan launch vehicle, a highly customizable, two-stage rocket designed to deliver payloads of up to 300 kg to orbits at 700 km altitude.
This landmark initiative is being supported by the Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory body under the Department of Science & Technology (DST). The TDB has sanctioned financial assistance for the project titled “Development and Commercialization of Modular Configurable Launch Vehicle for 100 Kg Payload.” The aim is to revolutionize satellite launches by making them more affordable, accessible, and efficient, thus accelerating India's space capabilities.
Agnibaan: A Game-Changer for India’s Satellite Launch Ecosystem
Headquartered in Chennai and incubated at IIT-Madras, Agnikul Cosmos is led by a team of 45 former ISRO scientists and supported by over 200 engineers. The company has made remarkable strides in space technology, achieving a historic milestone with the maiden launch of Agnibaan SOrTeD, the world’s first flight using a single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine.
The Agnibaan vehicle promises to disrupt the satellite launch industry by offering:
- Dedicated, scalable launches for payloads ranging from 30 to 300 kg.
- Reduced lead times, enabling satellite launches in just two weeks.
- Mobile launch systems that can be deployed globally, ensuring operational flexibility.
- Customizable space missions for small satellites, eliminating the inefficiencies of traditional rideshare models.

Agnibaan incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including:

Sh. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the Technology Development Board, hailed the reforms initiated under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, which have opened the space sector to private players. He emphasized that such reforms have transformed India into a global hub for space innovation, fostering nearly 200 private space startups.
“These visionary reforms have not only paved the way for private players like Agnikul Cosmos but also exemplify the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat in action. Agnikul’s success underscores India’s indigenous talent and its ability to set new benchmarks in space technology commercialization,” said Sh. Pathak.

Founders Mr. Srinath Ravichandran and Mr. Syed Peer Mohamed Shah Khadri of Agnikul Cosmos expressed their gratitude for the TDB’s support, acknowledging the encouragement it provides to the team. "We started as a start-up at IIT Madras in a DST-supported lab (NCCRD). Today, with this financial backing from TDB, we feel empowered to continue building world-class space technology hardware right here in India," said the founders.
