Over 4,400 faculty vacancies in IITs filled, backlog through special recruitment: Minister

All the central higher educational institutions including IITs have also been instructed to fill the backlog vacancies through special recruitment drives for SC/ST/OBC categories.

New Delhi :-  The Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar in a written reply to an unstarred question of Lok Sabha said that as many as 4,440 faculty vacancies of Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC) have been filled under the mission mode of the recruitment drive for the Central Higher Educational Institutions (CHEIs), including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). 

Answering a question in the Lok Sabha, on whether the reservation rosters are prepared by each IIT for direct recruitment to each teaching faculty cadre, Sarkar said: “The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous bodies governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 as amended from time to time, and the statutes framed thereunder. IITs have been directed to follow the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Act, 2019 and the guidelines issued by DoPT with regard to the preparation of rosters. IITs issues rolling advertisements for faculty recruitment, which are open throughout the year for all candidates, who fulfil the required qualifications and experience for faculty positions in IITs.”

Sharing data, Sarkar also said that the Central Higher Educational Institutions (CHEIs), including IITs have undertaken a mission mode recruitment drive and thus more than 4,440 faculty vacancies of SC/ ST/ OBC categories have been filled during the mission.

Occurrence of vacancies, Sarkar added, and filling thereof is a continuous process. The vacancies arise due to retirement, resignation and additional requirement on account of enhanced students’ strength. All CHEIs including IITs have also been instructed to fill the backlog vacancies through special recruitment drives for SC/ST/OBC categories, the minister said.
