JMI VC Introduces Innovative Program to Support Individuals with Learning Disabilities

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD 2024) on December 3, 2024. To mark this event, a special programme was held at the Child Guidance Centre, JMI and operated by the Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Society, where Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif was the Chief Guest. He inaugurated a six-day residential short-term course on Specific Learning Disabilities, which is being conducted by Malviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC), JMI, from 3rd  to 9th  December, 2024.

Mr. Devendar Kumar Sharma, CPIO, Ministry of Education, Govt of India,  Registrar of JMI, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Prof. Veera Gupta, Director, MMTTC,  Prof. Naveed Jamal, Chief Proctor, other faculty members and non-teaching staff were present during the function.

The theme of IDPD 2024 was “Promoting Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The special children from the Child Guidance Centre showcased a theatrical performance entitled Hunar, which was followed by a fancy dress event and a bag-pack race, infusing the celebration with joy and energy.  One of the highlights of the event was the inauguration of the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Department by the Vice Chancellor. The event was supervised by Prof. Sara Begum, General Secretary of the Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Welfare Society.

Speaking on the occasion the Vice Chancellor said “It is a day to celebrate the contributions, resilience, and leadership of persons with disabilities, as well as to renew our commitment to an inclusive society where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.” At the Child Guidance Centre, I am inspired by the dedication to providing children with the support they need to realize their potential. “Your work aligns perfectly with the global push to amplify voices often unheard. You are not just helping children navigate challenges but are cultivating leaders who will redefine the future.” said the Vice Chancellor.

He further said “Today, let us pledge to remove the barriers-physical, technological, and attitudinal- that hinder inclusion. Let us commit to creating pathways for persons with disabilities to lead in all fields- education, business, governance, and beyond. By doing so, we ensure not only their well-being but also enrich society as a whole. Together, we can amplify leadership, champion inclusion, and build a sustainable and equitable future for all.”
