National Press Day celebrated in Central University of Haryana

On the occasion of National Press Day, a one-day National seminar on the ‘Discourse on Contemporary Media’ was organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Central University of Haryana (CUH)

 

Haryana: On the occasion of National Press Day, a one-day National seminar on the ‘Discourse on Contemporary Media’ was organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendergarh. In this seminar, the Honourable Vice-chancellor of the Central University of Haryana, Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar was invited as a Chief Guest. To do a discussion on the contemporary media, Mr. Ashok Srivastava, senior consultant editor, DD news; Mr. Mahesh Kumar, editor, Dainik Bhaskar; Mr. Abhishek Mahrotra, editor, Business World Hindi; Ms. Jyotsna Bedi, senior news anchor, were invited as speakers to share their thoughts and discuss contemporary media.

Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar stressed upon how advertisements are changing the narrative of the society. This is the influence of the advertisements that are guiding people what to eat.  People are facing health hazards due to these misguided advertisements. It is also the duty of the media to inform people about such advertisements. People need to become media literate to understand the content of the media. He said that media is a powerful instrument of social change and healthy democracy. Speaker Ashok Srivastava, introduced various news agencies of the country. He also shared his experiences with fake news and reporting. Prof. Sunita Srivastva stressed upon the importance of credible information sources in the present time. He said that due to the penetration of the internet and mobile phone, reading hobbies of the coming generation are very poor. Their knowledge and understanding about the world is not appropriate. He advised the students to become a proficient media professional they need to read the newspaper regularly.   

Dr. Ashok Kumar, HoD welcomed the guest and said that press day celebration is a symbol of free and fair press in the country. Media is an important stakeholder of democracy. Media is one of the important platforms to initiate dialogue, deliberation and discussion in society. Mr. Mahesh Kumar addressed the audience and discussed how information was being provided to the audience in the past. He also discussed the algorithms used by Google and social media along with the working techniques of the media. A question-answer session was also done to answer the questions of the students. Mr. Abhishek Mahrotra put his valuable thoughts on contemporary media. Later, Ms. Sangita Tanwar shared her thoughts and experience on contemporary media. The event’s audience also got an opportunity to hear Ms. Jyotsna Bedi, senior news anchor at Time Now and gained knowledge from this senior media professional. University’s registrar, Prof Sunil Kumar appreciated the initiative taken by the department and considered it ‘unparalleled.’ Department teachers and the students were present on this occasion.
