New Delhi: The iconic Dogra Hall at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) resonated with admiration and applause as NASA astronaut (ret.) and U.S. Navy Captain (ret.) Sunita L. Williams delivered an inspiring talk titled ‘The Making of an Astronaut: Sunita Williams’ Story’ on January 20, 2026.
Sharing vivid experiences from her recent space mission during Expeditions 71/72, Ms. Williams transported the audience into the vastness of space, making complex aspects of human spaceflight both relatable and inspiring. Her talk offered deep insights into life in orbit, the challenges of long-duration missions, and the spirit of exploration that drives humanity forward.
Ms. Williams was the inaugural speaker of the Prof. V. N. Vazirani Institute Lecture, instituted in memory of Prof. V. N. Vazirani by his sons, Vijay Vazirani and Umesh Vazirani. The event witnessed the presence of IIT Delhi’s senior leadership, including the Director, Deputy Directors, Deans, faculty members, researchers, and a large gathering of enthusiastic students.
During her visit, Ms. Williams also met Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, and members of the senior administration. Prof. Banerjee highlighted IIT Delhi’s growing contributions to space technology and its ongoing collaborations with ISRO.
Reflecting on the evolving era of human space exploration, Ms. Williams remarked, “It is a very exciting time in human space exploration. Every new project has its ups and downs, but each one teaches us something and prepares us better for what comes next.” Emphasising problem-solving in space missions, she added that solutions are often simple if one observes systems carefully.
Inviting the audience to imagine life in zero gravity, she explained how the absence of gravity deepens understanding of materials, medicine, and human behaviour, ultimately helping humanity learn more about itself and the universe.
The lecture was followed by an engaging fireside chat moderated by Prof. Shilpi Sharma, Associate Dean (Academic Outreach & New Initiatives). Drawing from questions shared by the IIT Delhi community, the discussion explored Ms. Williams’ childhood, her discipline as a student-athlete and swimmer, the importance of teamwork, and coping mechanisms during extended space missions.
Sharing a cherished memory, Ms. Williams recalled opening a package of Indian food in space and sharing it with her crewmates, highlighting how food creates connection even in orbit. Speaking about the profound perspective gained from space, she described the “overview effect,” noting how seeing Earth from above reinforces the idea that humanity shares one interconnected planet beyond borders.
The visit left the IIT Delhi community inspired by Ms. Williams’ extraordinary journey, resilience, and message of unity through science and exploration.
