Mumbai ; The Maharashtra government has taken a step to control rising private school fees by bringing back a long-unused fee revision committee. The move is expected to give relief to parents who have been complaining about frequent fee hikes.
The committee will now act as the final authority in fee-related disputes and can review and even change decisions taken by other panels. It has the power to call records, check fee structures, and give final orders that schools must follow.
At the same time, regional committees have also been set up across cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to handle cases at a local level. These panels will look into complaints from parents and monitor fee increases in schools.
As per the rules, private schools are generally allowed to increase fees by up to 15% and usually only once in two years. Any higher increase needs approval from at least 76% of parents or proper justification. During any dispute, schools can only charge a limited amount until a final decision is made.
Parents can raise complaints through the education department if they feel a school has increased fees unfairly. The government said the delay in restarting these committees was due to the process of appointing retired judges, which is required by law.
This step comes at a time when concerns over rising school fees have been growing, and the government is trying to bring more control and transparency to the system.
