Bengaluru: CET (Common Entrance Test) 2022 ranks of hundreds of OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) students withheld and the students are in a limbo as the Karnataka Examinations Authority(KEA) is yet to release their ranks while their scores have been announced already.

On February 8, 2022, thehigh court had passed an interim order directing KEA to permit students carrying OCI cards to appear in the examination and participate in the counselling process professional courses.

“It is also made clear that as directed by the Supreme Court that the OCI students are also permitted to be treated on a par with Indian students and allowed to apply for any course/courses, including Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), for the year 2022-23. This relief is not restricted to petitions herein. The respondent-authorities are required to extend this benefit to all similarly situated students,” the bench said.

“We wrote the exam based on the Karnataka high court order. Many of the students have been studying here for the past 10 years and their parents have been paying taxes regularly in India. Why did they allow the candidate to write the exam when they do not want to release the rank followed by the counselling? This undermines the students’ efforts,” said a parent.

The parents alleges that while all the other students were able to pay Rs.500 for the CET registration, the OCI had to pay Rs.5000. “It is the KEA itself that allowed us to register. They now do not even have the courtesy to release the ranks,” said the father of a candidate. As per the parents around 250 OCI students wait for the CET ranks.

KEA, however, quoted Supreme Court as the reason for not releasing the ranks. “There is no SC order that stated that OCI students should be treated on a par with NRI students and not on a par with Indian citizens. We got instructions from the GOI (Government of India) on this citing the SC order. We have filed an affidavit in the Karnataka high court regarding this around 20 days ago,” said executive director S Ramya.

Parents although have written to the KEA have decided to take legal recourse now.
