New Delhi : Supreme Court Judge, Mr. Justice Kotiswar Singh, presented the prestigious Justice J.S. Verma National Award to former civil servant and academician Prof. Y.S.R. Murthy for his outstanding contribution to the field of Human Rights Jurisprudence. The award, instituted by the Capital Foundation Society, was conferred at a function in the Capital on August 31.
The ceremony was followed by a thought-provoking lecture delivered by Justice Kotiswar Singh on “India, That is Bharat which I am still discovering.”
Prof. Murthy, who served for over 12 years in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has been widely recognized for his work in public health, mental health, disability rights, and promotion of human rights literacy. He also played a pivotal role in academic research and advocacy during his tenure at the O.P. Jindal Global University (2009–2020) and later as the Founding Vice Chancellor of RV University (2020–2024), where he established dedicated Centres for Human Rights Studies.
He has spearheaded research on voting rights, death penalty abolition, extrajudicial killings in Manipur, and the functioning of Foreigners Tribunals in Assam. Prof. Murthy also initiated the Justice J.S. Verma Memorial Lecture Series, bringing eminent voices into dialogue on human rights.
His two MOOC courses on human rights, translated into eight Indian languages, continue to run successfully for the past seven years. Beyond academia, he remains actively engaged with NGOs working on women’s empowerment, SC/ST rights, disability inclusion, and torture prevention.
Alongside Prof. Murthy, 11 other distinguished personalities from the fields of Law, Medicine, Defence, and MSME were also honoured. The event was presided over by Justice A.K. Patnaik, former Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Capital Foundation Society.
