New Delhi, In a significant development, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is considering reviving its own PhD entrance examinations, a move welcomed by the JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA). The decision comes after the cancellation of the June 2024 UGC-NET examination and JNUTA's consistent demand for the university to retain institutional control over its entrance examinations.
Key Demands:
1. Immediate Revival: JNUTA urges the university to revive its own entrance examinations for the 2024-25 academic session, instead of waiting for the 2025-26 cycle.
2. Extend to UG and PG Exams: The university should also bring undergraduate and postgraduate entrance examinations under the JNUEE umbrella, ensuring economies of scale and preserving academic reputation and autonomy.
3. Restore Faculty Participation: JNUTA demands the revival of the old system, where faculty had active participation in conducting entrance examinations, ensuring integrity, accountability, and attracting diverse talent from across the country.
Background:
The university had earlier decided to use UGC-NET scores for PhD admissions, a move imposed without faculty deliberations or authoritative body approvals. JNUTA has consistently opposed this decision, citing loss of autonomy and increased costs for candidates. The association welcomes the current development as a vindication of its stance and a positive response to its demands.
